Description

Examination of the history, society, and culture of early modern Japan in the period of rule by the warrior class: the samurai. Examination of the formation and collapse of the samurai-dominated political order of the Tokugawa shogunate, as well as themes like social status, gender and sexuality, religion, and connections to the outside world during the period of Tokugawa rule.
  • Recommended: EAST 212 or HIST 208 or HIST 218
  • Restrictions: Not open to students who have taken HIST 443 or EAST 493 when the topic was "Age of Samurai".
