About the Department of Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical engineers are involved in the conception, design, implementation, and operation of mechanical systems across a wide range of industries—including aerospace, energy, robotics, manufacturing, medical devices, and transportation. With the growing importance of sustainability, digital engineering, and interdisciplinary design, mechanical engineers contribute their expertise in domains such as advanced materials and structures, smart manufacturing, and artificial intelligence.
To prepare students for this broad and evolving landscape, the mechanical engineering undergraduate program at McGill University offers a rigorous education grounded in mathematics, science, and engineering. The curriculum prerequisite structure ensures the progressive introduction of advanced concepts in areas such as solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, as well as dynamics and control.
Hands-on experience is woven throughout the program. Students are introduced to engineering design and laboratory experimentation early in the curriculum. They apply their skills in increasingly complex projects, culminating in the capstone design experience, where students work in teams to solve real-world engineering challenges that integrate analysis, design, manufacturing, and testing.
Students can enrich their degree through:
- the Honours program, which provides deeper exposure to research and is targeted at undergraduate students;
- a Minor in Aerospace Engineering, for those seeking training in flight systems and aerodynamics, and spacecraft dynamics;
- a number of technical complementary electives, encouraging students to broaden their interdisciplinary perspective on diverse mechanical engineering topics.
Flexibility in technical electives supports the pursuit of a Minor in another faculty, often requiring only one additional semester of study. This allows students to customize their academic path while maintaining a strong core in mechanical engineering.
Beyond the classroom, undergraduate life in the department is enriched by a vibrant and seminal student culture. Students' initiatives lead to their participation in award-winning design teams such as McGill Formula Electric, McGill Baja Racing, McGill Robotics, McGill Rocket Team, McGill Aerospace Design Team (AERO), and more. These teams are student-led and operate with a high degree of independence, providing rich opportunities for hands-on learning, leadership, and peer collaboration. The broader student community is supported by the McGill Association of Mechanical Engineers (MAME) and the Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS). These organizations facilitate outreach activities, organize professional development events, and help build a strong sense of community within the department.
