Description
The doctrinal, theological, and legal transformation of Persia after the rise of the Safavid Empire, presenting the interface between legal discourse and popular Shi`ism, heterodoxy (including messianism), and mysticism; the jurists’ approaches to temporal authority and association with the Safavid government while awaiting the advent of the Hidden Imam; the rise of the traditionists, their attack on the mujtahids and the question of legal heresy.
