About the Department of Integrated Studies in Education
The Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE), created in September 2001, incorporates the programs and staff previously associated with the Departments of Culture and Values in Education, Educational Studies, Second Language Education, and First Nations and Inuit Education.
The Department offers four-year programs for CEGEP graduates and five-year programs for out-of-province students leading to a B.Ed. degree, and offers a three-year program for CEGEP graduates and four-year program for out-of-province students leading to a B.A.(Education) degree.

Overview of DISE's Undergraduate Programs
Secondary Education (B.Ed.)Programs
The B.Ed. Secondary Education program aims to prepare strong teachers for the secondary school level. This integrated 120-credit program (150 credits for out-of-province students) combines academic studies to provide background depth in subjects taught at the secondary level with professional studies in pedagogy, curriculum, and educational foundations, all organized around school-based field experiences. Students can choose their teaching profiles from the following areas:
- English
- Mathematics
- Science and Technology
- Social Sciences (History and Citizenship, and either Geography or Culture and Citizenship in Quebec)
Students applying to the B.Ed. Secondary Education in the areas of Mathematics or Science and Technology should refer to the Undergraduate Admissions site for specific admission requirements.

Music Education / Music Elementary and Secondary Concurrent Major (B.Mus./B.Ed. double degree)Program
**This program will not be available for admission for the academic year 2025-2026 .**
This program provides students with the opportunity to obtain a B.Mus. (Music Education) degree and a B.Ed. (Music Elementary and Secondary) degree concurrently. The two degrees are awarded during the same convocation period. This integrated program consists of studies in music to develop musicianship and professional studies in pedagogy, curriculum, and educational foundations organized around school-based field experiences in elementary and secondary music classrooms.
Students who have completed Quebec CEGEP, French Baccalaureate, International Baccalaureate, or at least one year of university studies may have fewer credits to complete, depending on transfer credits and exemptions by way of passing the music placement exams. This can potentially reduce the Concurrent program duration from normal five years to four.

Application process for the Concurrent B.Mus. / B.Ed. in Music program:
- Applicants without a Bachelor of Music degree who wish to pursue a teacher education degree specializing in Music should apply to the Concurrent Bachelor of Music (Music Education)/Bachelor of Education (Music Elementary and Secondary) program. Students who have partially completed a Bachelor of Music program are eligible to apply for Advanced Standing in the Concurrent program.
- Important: Applications for this concurrent program should be made to the Schulich School of Music. For detailed application information, refer to the School's Admissions web page.
Application process for the B.Ed. in Music program:
- Applicants who have completed a Bachelor of Music degree from a North American university should apply to the Bachelor of Education in Music program in the Faculty of Education and, if eligible, will receive Advanced Standing for applicable courses.

Kindergarten and Elementary Education (B.Ed.) Programs
The aim of the B.Ed. Kindergarten and Elementary program is to prepare strong teachers for the elementary school level. This integrated 120-credit program (150 credits for out-of-province students) consists of academic studies to provide a generalist background in elementary school subjects and professional studies in pedagogy, curriculum, and educational foundations organized around school-based field experiences.
Options within the Kindergarten and Elementary Education program are:

Teaching English as a Second Language (B.Ed.) Programs
This program prepares specialist teachers to teach English as a second language (ESL) at both the elementary school level (including regular and intensive ESL) and the secondary school level (including regular ESL and EESL – Enriched English as a Second Language).
This integrated 120-credit program (150 credits for out-of-province students) consists of academic and professional components. The academic component provides students with opportunities to develop a broad liberal education and to study language and language learning from linguistic, social, cultural, and psychological perspectives. The professional components revolve around school-based field experiences, supported by studies in pedagogy, curriculum, and educational foundations.
Applicants to the B.Ed. TESL program must pass the English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) prior to admission. Eligible applicants will receive email notification from the Admissions Office regarding registration for the ELPT.
An option within the B.Ed. in TESL program is Teaching Greek Language & Culture.

Graduate Programs
At the graduate level, the Department offers M.A. programs with thesis and non-thesis options in the following areas: Education and Society, Educational Leadership, and Second Language Education.
The Department offers a Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning (MATL), leading to teacher certification at the secondary level for those meeting specific criteria.
The Department also offers graduate certificates in Leadership, Teaching English as a Second Language and Pédagogie de l'Immersion Française.
