Academic Advising
Academic advising in the BCom program is designed to help you understand your degree structure, make informed course choices, and navigate university policies. The BCom Student Affairs Office provides year-round academic advice, and guidance to help you plan your program, choose courses, understand faculty policies, and make informed decisions throughout your degree. Advisors are available to support you at every stage of your studies, whether you are just beginning the BCom program or preparing to graduate. However, BCom students are still expected to take an active role in leading, planning, and managing their academic path.
Students are responsible for ensuring that their course selections meet all program and degree requirements, follow faculty and university regulations, and meet all published deadlines. Advisors can clarify policies and help with degree planning, but the final responsibility for your academic decisions rests with you. Each student is required to familiarize themselves with the Faculty regulations as stated in the Course Catalogue and on the McGill, Faculty of Management, and BCom Student Affairs Office websites.
It is especially important for students to regularly review their unofficial transcript in Minerva and use myProgress for degree progress and completion tracking. These documents and tools should be used in combination with the course catalogue and regular academic advising. Students should verify course registration in advance of the end of the add/drop period each term. A graduation check before their final term to confirm the requirements for graduation have been met is required for all students.
Please note that the myProgress tool may generate errors or omissions; students are ultimately responsible for verifying all information and ensuring completion of their degree requirements using the course catalogue and the BCom Areas of Study webpage combined with regular academic advising appointments.
Advising for students in the Major in Mathematics and Statistics for Management or the Major in Economics should also consult a departmental advisor for course approval and graduation checks.
Students taking a minor or minor concentration in another department must meet with a departmental advisor for course and minor related advising and for confirmation of graduation. All students who complete a minor must provide a minor course approval form to the BCom Student Affairs office signed by the departmental advisor.
Career Coaches are available to support the career planning and internship goals of students in the BCom program through the Career Services office located on the 6th floor of the Bronfman Building.
