Program Requirements
The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) is a 120-credit degree designed to provide a strong foundation in scientific inquiry and exploration. When applying, students must select a Program Group on the application form - this will determine the range of programs they will be able to choose from as part of their degree. For additional information on applying and Program Groups, consult the Faculty of Science website.
To graduate with a B.Sc., students must fulfill the following degree requirements:
Foundation Program requirements
The B.Sc. degree includes a mandatory Foundation Program, which provides a common academic base for all Science students. Students may be exempt from some or all of the Foundation Program requirements depending on any Advanced Standing they are awarded for their pre-McGill studies or results from McGill Science Placement Exams.
Consult the list of courses that make up the Science Foundation Program requirements.
Your chosen program requirements
Once a student has completed (or been exempted from) the Foundation Program, they will declare their chosen program(s) and begin taking courses towards the completion of the relevant program requirements. This is usually done at the beginning of the U1 year.
Choosing your program means selecting:
- the program structure that best suits your academic interests (Liberal, Major, Honours or Joint Programs)
- the specific program(s) you wish to pursue within the chosen structure (for example: Biology, Environment, Physics, etc...). Note: students may only choose from the list of programs within the Program Group to which they were admitted.
Consult the Faculty of Science programs page for details on the four program structures and specific programs available in each.
